Introduced by Sens. Jon Tester and John Thune, ‘Sportsmen’s Act of 2012’ would promote public access, sustain fish and wildlife habitat, and increase natural resources conservation funding.

WASHINGTON – The Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership roundly praised a package of legislative measures important to sportsmen that was introduced in the U.S. Senate today.

The Sportsmen’s Act of 2012, introduced by Sens. Jon Tester of Montana and John Thune of South Dakota, addresses public access and fish and wildlife habitat conservation issues of great concern to hunters and anglers. The package is being presented as an amendment to the Senate Farm Bill.

“The TRCP expresses gratitude to Senators Tester and Thune for their efforts to work across the political divide and propose this sensible yet comprehensive package of bills,” said TRCP President and CEO Whit Fosburgh. “This legislation will directly benefit millions of American sportsmen and the nation’s vibrant outdoor recreation economy.”

The Sportsmen’s Act of 2012 has 19 separate provisions, including:

The bill integrates components of a recent House of Representatives bill, the Sportsmen’s Heritage Act of 2012 (H.R. 4089), which was largely embraced by members of the sportsmen’s community, including the TRCP.

“The TRCP will remain engaged alongside partners to see that this immensely important proposal crosses the finish line,” Fosburgh continued, “on behalf of American hunters and anglers, in the name of Theodore Roosevelt and in support of our nation’s irreplaceable outdoor sporting traditions.”

Inspired by the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, the TRCP is a coalition of organizations and grassroots partners working together to preserve the traditions of hunting and fishing.
